We can find very little about the background of this sketch, save that it was created by frequent College architects Heyl, Bond, Miller.

Discussions around introducing coeducation at Muhlenberg were recurrent through the twentieth century until it became a reality in 1957. We know that the decision to move forward and raise the necessary funds was made in 1953, and the plan was to build a new men's dormitory (Martin Luther) and convert West Hall (now Brown) for the incoming women. It's possible this sketch dates to the late 1940s; in the spring of 1945, the College announced that it would begin admitting women in 1948, but the influx of students taking advantage of the G.I. Bill negated that plan at the time.
